Letter: Vote for representation, not chaos

Libertarian Lily Tang Williams managed to get herself on the ballot for District 2 Representative to U.S. Congress despite no legislative or government employment experience. Prior defeats in state elections are her only knowledge of the ways of the public sector, which has procedures and rules not found in private employment. Knowledge of laws guiding legal governance matters. Perhaps she’s counting on the Freedom Caucus to initiate her into how Congress works. To replace a mature, experienced NH congresswoman with someone who has neither of these two qualifications is risky in these troubling times.

In its reporting, the Concord Monitor mentioned an endorsement by Tang Williams’ friend, state representative from Weare Leah Cushman. This is hardly a recommendation, as far-right Cushman has shown herself to be intolerant of views expressed by moderate or liberal constituents. Both women have posted disparaging memes on social media. Neither has shown interest in bi-partisanship on issues affecting everyone in our state. To represent, according to the dictionary, means to “act as an agent or spokesman for,” which requires personal and political maturity to be an effective legislator. We have seen the chaos and gridlock right wing obstructionists create. That’s not representation. New Hampshire voters have diverse opinions, and want to be heard and represented. The only safe way for that to happen is for voters of every political persuasion to elect Maggie Goodlander to Congress.
