Letter: Pink ribbons and transgender athletes

To the parents who wore pink arm bands to the girls’ soccer match I would like to say this. Yes, you had the right to wear those pink arm bands and I agree with you that transgender athletes who were once male but transitioned to female should not be allowed to play in women’s sports. Only women’s sports will lose in that deal as the male body is anatomically stronger and superior in most athletics. A transitioned LeBron James would dominate the WNBA but a transitioned Caitlin Clark wouldn’t even make it to the C league in the NBA.

However, you also need to be aware of another fact. Transgender people have been mocked, discriminated against and bullied all their lives. They deserve our support not our hostility. So, yes, hold on to your position about athletics but attempt to become more civil in your approach. License doesn’t mean being appropriate. You are parents and moral guides setting examples about civility and behavior not rowdy teenagers. Act like it.
