Letter: Congressional representation

I read the profile of Lily Tang Williams (Monitor, 9/24) with genuine interest and a sincere attempt at open mindedness. Her story of early childhood in China under Mao’s repression, and her immigration and assimilation to the U.S. is inspirational. However, I cannot reconcile or accept her politics. She claims to cherish the freedoms that are guaranteed by our Constitution, but she completely ignores the intent of The Framers: “to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare.”

Although they could not have had any inkling of the havoc that could be wrought by an AR 15, or of the ravages of climate change related to our escalating consumption of fossil fuels, they clearly understood that We The People would be better off with a government structured to take on the tasks that improve and protect our collective well being, rather than succumb to the anarchy of total lawlessness. We need a Representative in the House who believes in these tenets of unity and common interests. I will be casting my vote for Maggie Goodlander on election day.
