Conditions were far from ideal at the Division II golf championship on Tuesday. Those who were able to adapt on Windham Country Club’s challenging course fared better.

Senior Owen Webber tied for 10th place, shooting an 11-over par 82 to make the cut for Saturday’s individual championship, leading the Bow Falcons to fifth place.

Souhegan (46-over 401) took the D-II team crown, while Winnacunnet (405), Portsmouth (415), St. Thomas (423), Bow (432), Oyster River (438), Kingswood (451) and Timberlane (470) rounded out the other team scores.

Portsmouth’s Grey Gagnon and Souhegan’s Joe Mayo tied for the lead at 2-over 73, and will be on top of the leaderboard when the 16 individuals who made the cut compete in Saturday’s final individual round at Concord’s Beaver Meadow.

“It was one of the most brutal conditions I’ve ever (coached or played in),” Bow head coach Matt Davis said. “It was very challenging. I don’t know if I’ve ever had kids play in a championship that was that hard of a golf course. Throw on cold weather and high winds, it was a trifecta of challenges.”

With high winds on a short course, long accurate drives weren’t common. Instead, being able to play your way out of trouble on the shots that followed was the factor that separated the field.

“When you look at the top list, those kids played the way the course needed to be played and didn’t get aggressive with it,” Davis said. “The course isn’t incredibly long so there isn’t a need for a long drive off the tee. It’s about getting it into play as quickly as possible. Owen didn’t hit the ball exactly where he wanted to, but he was able to get into play and save a par or a bogey instead of (a double or triple bogey).”

Merrimack Valley senior Isaak Davis carded a 13-over 84 in a three-way tie for 14th place to round out the top 16 moving on to the final.

Bow sophomores Aidan O’Keefe (tied 17th, 14-over 85) and Jake Gancarz (tied 20th, 15-over 86), and senior Andre Contreras (tied 23rd, 16-over 87) were all within striking distance of the cut.

Junior Brendan O’Keeffe (tied 36th, 21-over 92) was the fifth scoring golfer for the Falcons, and sophomore Sean Walton (tied 42nd, 23-over 94), senior Mikey Magdziasz (tied 56th, 28-over 99) and freshman Cavot Blaney (62nd, 30-over 101) also represented Bow.

MV’s Colton Magoon (tied 56th, 28-over), and Pembroke Academy’s Zac Bemis (41st, 22-over 93) and Cameron Carter (tied 52nd, 26-over 97) also competed.

Bow improved over last year’s sixth-place finish and went 24-4 in the regular season, improvement over its 22-6 mark last year.

“We have a very big sophomore class and I think having this one year to grow physically and mentally was helpful,” coach Davis said. “Unfortunately we’re going to have to find a way to replace three seniors, but I know the (underclassmen) can fill their shoes.”
