Eleven players contributed points and freshman goalie Carter Heise turned away every shot he faced as the Concord High boys’ hockey team (17-2-0) advanced to the Division I semifinals with an 8-0 win over Manchester (9-9-2) on Saturday.

The Tide opened the scoring just 22 seconds in when freshman forward Austin Proulx picked up the puck in his zone, raced forward and faked out a Kings defender before firing a shot into the net.

Concord’s defense stunted Manchester all night. Senior forward Cam Chandonnet came up big in the second period with the best defensive action of the night by poking a puck out of a Kings forward’s one-on-one with Heise.

After that save, Concord turned it up offensively. During Concord’s first power play, junior forward Chad Lariviere dished a perfect backhand pass by freshman forward Nolan Walsh, and he finished it precisely into the top left corner.

Less than three minutes later, freshman forward Lukas Rondiak scored another, also assisted by Walsh, as Concord broke open the game.

“I think just staying patient and composed and not getting scared when they would try to aggressively forecheck against you. I think tape-to-tape passes and heads-up plays are the main thing. When we connect, we can do it very well,” Rondiak said.

Walsh, who has been a breakout newcomer for the Tide, set his teammates up to score on multiple occasions and notched four assists with positional awareness. All eight of the goals came from different players.

Sophomore forward Jaden Haas, senior forward Trevor Craigue and junior forward Tyler Morin each had a goal and assist. Sophomore forward Tyler Mayo and senior defenseman Tyler Fennelly, scored a goal each alongside Proulx.

“They played really far back, and it allowed us to make plays along the blue line and give us a lot of space,” said Nolan Walsh. “It’s great, definitely a confidence booster.”

Head coach Dunc Walsh credited the win to the overall strength of every line he has at his disposal, their ability to stay calm under pressure against the Kings’ physical presence and their good movement and composure in front of goal.

Concord will play the D-I semifinals at JFK Coliseum in Manchester on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The boys will face off against fifth-seeded Hanover, one of the two teams they lost to in the regular season.

“We just gotta play solid in our zone, good coverage, being where we’re supposed to be to covering, not going running around and puck-watching, and not get two guys on one guy and do what we do,” Coach Walsh said. “We practice it every day, so we’ll have two good days of practice.”
