Cross country: Area runners compete at New Englands

Ten area runners competed at the New England Interscholastic Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, Maine.

Hopkinton freshman Maddy Lane finished 17th in the girls’ race, the best finish by an area runner, completing the 5K course in 18 minutes, 30.95 seconds. Kearsarge senior Molly Ellison (19:42) was 86th.

The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy boys were the only area team that qualified, finishing 18th out of 30 teams.

Seniors Jamie Lano (16:27.73) and Sanjith Nomula (16:27.83) finished 53rd and 54th to lead the Bears, while Luc Kerouac (131st, 17:10), Liam McLean (199th, 17:54), Keegan Sousa (201st, 17:55), Ben Jobin (228th, 18:23) and Landon Graveline (234th, 18:36) also represented CBNA.

Hillsboro-Deering freshman Elijah Bodanza finished 102nd in 16:53. 

Steven Hergenrother of Ridgefield, Conn., won the boys’ title in 15:21.87, leading Ridgefield to the team title with 57 points.

Danbury, Conn. (181), Xavier, Conn. (200), Hanover (255) and Cumberland, R.I. (266) were the other top five boys’ teams.

Ruth White of Orono, Maine won the girls’ title in 17:12.25.
