Pembroke 1, Kennett 0

Key players: Pembroke – Ashlyn Barker (goal), Annika Jawidzik (goalie)

Highlights: The Spartans stunned last year’s Division II runner-up in their season opener. Barker scored on a breakaway midway through the first quarter and Pembroke held on for the rest of the game. Carlee LePage and Anne Phillips controlled the midfield, stopper Ava Strazzeri was all over the field to shut down the Eagle attack and Jawidzik made a handful of saves for the shutout. Kennett beat Pembroke 8-0 last season.

Boys’ Soccer

Bow 1, Kingswood 1

Key players: Bow – Milo Cocola (goal)

Highlights: Kingswood scored on a round off a set piece 27 minutes into the game. Bow created many chances, with Cocola finally scoring the tying goal with 12 minutes left in the match. This was a rematch of last year’s Division II semifinal, a game Bow eventually won in a shootout.

Merrimack Valley 3, Plymouth 1

Key players: MV – Joey Olivera (2 goals), Logan Vong (goal), Riley Moore-Jahn (assist)

Highlights: MV couldn’t break through Plymouth’s defense in the first half and the Bobcats capitalized on a turnover to lead 1-0 at halftime. The Pride came out in the secondhalf with a different attitude and dominated the possession of the ball. The first goal was created by freshman Moore-Jahn beat a defender and slid the ball perfectly to Vong’s feet who finished in the back of the net to tie the game. Olivera scored a pair of goals by pressuring Plymouth’s defenders and creating some mistakes, finishing off some loose balls. Carysn Perkins played a great game in the midfield to help MV secure the win.

Coach’s quote: “We didn’t play our best soccer today. The first half we seemed to be a bit slow when controlling the ball. The second half we did a better job of playing our game and it paid off with the three goals.” – MV’s Ken Fuller

Belmont 2, Newfound 1

Key players: Belmont  – Keegan Martinez (goal), Nate Allard (goal), Jake Michaelsen (assist), Jaxson Embree (8 saves)

Highlights: The Raiders scored in the 10th minute on an unassisted goal by Martinez. Newfound tied the game on a breakaway two minutes later, but Allard scored the game winner in the 27th minute. Embree was solid in net to keep the Bears off the board the rest of the way.

Hillsboro-Deering 5, Conant 1

Key players: H-D – Alex Crowe (3 goals, assist), Ryan Shortt (2 goals, assist), Braden Savoy (7 saves), Anthony Alibrandi, Jack Harrington, Ben Perrin

Highlights: Crowe’s hat trick and Shortt’s brace led the Hillcat offense, backed by the strong spine of Alibrandi, Harrington, Perrin, Kolton Lefebvre and keeper Savoy. H-D controlled the majority of the game with crisp play.

Coach’s quote: “I was really pleased to see the boys firing on all cylinders today, applying what we practice into every possession. While we still have some areas we need to clean up, I couldn’t be more thrilled with how we set the tone for our season.” – H-D’s Joey Gillett

Girls’ Soccer

Coe-Brown 3, Keene 0

Key players: Coe-Brown – Sadie Scruton (8 saves), Bella Lapierre (goal), Jaelyn Demers (goal), Jadyn Spearin (goal), Jennifer Noni (2 assists), Amanda Thomas (defense), Lizzy Joy (defense)

Highlights: Coe-Brown scored in the opening minute of both halves while containing a fast and aggressive Keene team. Lapierre opened the scoring one minute into the match with an assist from Noni. Demers put the Bears up 2-0 just 10 minutes later on a strike from distance off a feed from Mallory Carri. Spearin added the insurance goal, finishing a Noni corner kick to open the second half. The defensive unit played well while the midfield of Noni, Maggie Escabi and Spearin controlled play through most of the game.

Coach’s quote: “This was a good test against a much-improved Keene team. They were aggressive and played well. We needed to get this game under our belts and begin making adjustments to grow as a team and improve moving forward. Proud of the composure the girls displayed.” – Coe-Brown’s Josh Hils

Key players: H-D – Alexis Laporte (17 saves), Molly Smart, Stacia Murdough, Isabelle Johnson, Natalie Auger, Penelope Bows, Aleena Velazquez, Kylie Crowe

Highlights: The Orioles kept Laporte busy the entire match and the Hillcats turned away many Conant attempt, but it wasn’t enough to prevail in their season opener.

Coach’s quote: “Conant is a very disciplined and skilled team. Despite the score, we had some really great moments offensively and defensively. I am proud of this team for their efforts and we will use this game to prepare for our games next week.” – H-D’s Jenna Rheault

Prospect Mountain 2, Kearsarge 1

Key players: Prospect Mtn. – Olivia Noyes (goal), Juliette West (goal); Kearsarge – Carly Grant (goal), Chloe Hasey (assist), Naimah Wilson (11 saves)

Highlights: Kearsarge played tough in the first half and took a 1-0 lead. Grant scored off Hasey’s pass from the corner in the eighth minute, but the Timberwolves took control in the second, scoring two minutes into the half to tie the game. West put Prospect Mountain ahead in the 65th minute. The Cougars applied plenty of pressure in the closing minutes, but couldn’t break down the Timberwolves’ defense.

Highlights: The Generals finished fourth out of four teams at the Hollis-Brookline Coach Korcoulis Memorial Invitational. Korthals was the first of 48 runners to cross the finish line.

Girls’ Cross Country

Hollis-Brookline 37, Lebanon 41, John Stark 50

Key players: John Stark – Anna Chasse (3rd, 23:45), Kayla Barriere (4th, 24:30), Grace Meisser (13th, 28:19), Milla Lunderville (14th, 29:09), Amanda Leonard (17th, 30:03); Lebanon – Annelies Hanna (1st, 22:46), Olivia Hanna (2nd, 23:32)

Highlights: The Generals finished third out of three teams at the Hollis-Brookline Coach Korcoulis Memorial Invitational. Lebanon runners led the field of 26 with a 1-2 finish.
