High schools: Bow field hockey advances in D-II, Concord falls in D-I quarters; plus football, soccer and volleyball results from the weekend

D-II Field Hockey

No. 4 Bow 3, No. 5 Souhegan 1

Key players: Bow – Sophie Coombs (goal, assist), Josie Johnson (goal), Shire Kelley (goal), Peyton Vaughn (assist), Kaylee Jacques (midfield), Elise Jacques (midfield)

Highlights: Souhegan scored in the first quarter for an early 1-0 lead, but Kelley’s goal tied the game late in the second quarter. Coombs scored the game-winning goal off a penalty stroke at 13:44 in the fourth. Coombs assisted on Johnson’s goal off a corner less than two minutes later at 11:49. Bow will play No. 1 Hollis-Brookline in Tuesday’s semifinal at Exeter’s Bill Ball Stadium.  

Records: Bow 13-3-1; Souhegan 11-5-0

D-I Field Hockey

No. 2 Dover 1, No. 7 Concord 0

Key players: Dover – Hannah Deroy (goal), Scarlett Gray (shutout)

Highlights: Deroy scored in the fourth quarter to end Concord’s season in Saturday’s quarterfinal round.

Records: Dover 13-2-1; Concord 13-5-0

Pinkerton 44, Concord 13

Key players: Pinkerton – Aiden McDonald (9-for-11, 197 passing yards, 2 TD), Jamie Isaac (INT return TD, 150 scrimmage yards); Concord – Colin Savard (3 yard TD run), Tim Fahnbulleh (90 yard kickoff return TD), Colby Nyhan (extra point)

Highlights: The Astros took an early 16-0 before Fahnbulleh put the Tide on the board early in the second quarter. Pinkerton led 29-7 at halftime and by as much as 38-7 in the second half before Savard scored his touchdown. Concord closes its season on Friday night at Salem.

Records: Pinkerton 5-2; Concord 4-3

Bow 40, Pembroke 16

Key players: Bow – Chase Flagg (4 TD runs), Jonathan Gancarz (TD run), Thomas Schlegel (TD run), Kody McCranie (3-for-5 PAT)

Highlights: The Falcons made a playoff spot much more probable with a big win over the Spartans.

John Stark 13, Manchester West 0

Key players: John Stark – Weston Haartz (115 yards on 12 carries, 76 yard TD run), Joey Dykstra (fumble recovery TD)

Highlights: The Generals defense held the Blue Knights and 84 yards on the ground and picked off three West passes for their first shutout of the season. The victory puts John Stark in a very good position to make the playoffs.

Records: John Stark 5-3; West 5-3

Plymouth 48, Merrimack Valley 32

Key players: MV – Jack Parris (TD pass, TD run), Colby Scheffer (2 TD runs), Michael Heine (TD catch), Travis Garcia (2 FG)

Highlights: The Pride lines played very well against the first-place Bobcats, but it wasn’t enough to hand Plymouth a loss.

Coach’s quote: “Showed who we were against a very good football team today. Very proud of the effort which outweighs the outcome, we played all four quarters.” MV’s Matt Shaw

Boys’ Soccer

Coe-Brown 3, Pembroke 1

Key players: Coe-Brown – Kasey Searing (goal, assist), Ryan Kouchoukos (goal, assist), Tommy Maskwa (goal), Bruce LaPierre and Sam Frye (solid center back defense), Steve Phillips (4 saves)

Highlights: Pembroke converted a penalty kick 30 seconds into the game, but the Bears stayed level and fought back, starting with great team passing. Searing finished off a cross from Nick Caproni in the seventh minute and Coe-Brown didn’t look back. The Bears will be a top-7 seed for the tournament.

Coach’s quote: “We knew going into this that Pembroke had already been eliminated from playoffs and it was their senior night, so they would be playing with nothing to lose. We set an intent to pass the ball quickly and create chances, and that’s proved successful.” – Coe-Brown’s Christian Gompert

Records: Coe-Brown 8-6-2; Pembroke 4-10-2

Hopkinton 3, Hillsboro-Deering 0

Key players: Hopkinton – Cody Charron (goal), Rowan Boyle (goal), Nolan Linstad (goal), Noah Aframe (2 assists), Fin Murphy (assist), Travis Windhurst (2 saves); H-D – Braden Savoy (8 saves)

Highlights: The Hawks controlled the match and created several scoring chances, wrapping up the undefeated regular season and No. 1 seed for the Division III tournament with a shutout victory over the Hillcats. Charron scored the only goal of the first half in the 32nd minute, and Boyle (58th) and Linstad (62nd) scored four minutes apart in the second. H-D will make the postseason tournament as the No. 10 seed.

Coach’s quote: “To their credit, Hillsboro played stout defense and blocked many of our shot attempts. The pressure we created, however, just proved to be too much as we hammered home balls in the air for our first two goals, before a third goal that was the product of some beautiful combination play in close to the net.” – Hopkinton’s Scott Zipke

Girls’ Soccer

Bow 2, Souhegan 0

Key players: Bow – Anna Zerba (game-winning goal), Marissa Reyes (goal), Anna Fellers (assist), Lexana Farr (assist), Gwen Barrieau (goalie, shutout), Maeve Nadzan (defense), Vivian Madden (defense), Charlotte Larochelle (defense)

Highlights: Fellers drove a corner kick that Zerba hit out of the air and into the net with 17 minutes to go in the match. Two minutes later, Farr played a ball over to Reyes, who hit a beautiful shot for the Falcons’ second goal. Bow will have the No. 2 seed for the Division II tournament.

Coach’s quote: “The girls did an excellent job with their distribution and movement of the ball today against a very stingy Souhegan defense. A good, strong finish to the end of the season. Thank you to Souhegan for including us in their senior celebration.” – Bow’s Jay Vogt

Coe-Brown 1, Pembroke 1

Key players: Coe-Brown  – Bella Lapierre (goal), Samantha Perron (assist), Amanda Thomas (defense), Ellie Escabi (forward and midfield), Jaelyn Demers (forward)

Highlights: Lapierre put Coe-Brown on the board 16 minutes into the match on an assist from Perron. Despite several opportunities to get the go-ahead goal, the Bears were unable to find the back of the net. Coe-Brown will be the No. 4 seed for the Division II tournament, while Pembroke will have the No. 9 seed.

Coach’s quote: “This was another classic Coe-Brown vs. Pembroke game. Now the hard work begins and we need to prepare for the tournament. Proud of the way we have played and look forward to taking the next step as a team.” – Coe-Brown’s Josh Hils

Hopkinton 4, Hillsboro-Deering 0

Key players: Hopkinton – Isabella Serzans (2 goals), Skylar Clay (goal, assist), Paige Prisco-Nelson (goal), Abi Hotten-Somers (assist), Sadie Serzans (assist), Avery Loew (shutout), Kennedy Mark (midfield); H-D – Alexis LaPorte (goalie), Emma Davis (midfield)

Highlights: The Hawks scored two goals in each half to wrap up the regular season with a win. Clay had a laser of a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced in and Prisco-Nelson hit a one-timer from outside the box into the upper left corner. Hopkinton will have the No. 4 seed for the Division III postseason tournament.

Girls’ Volleyball

Coe-Brown 3, Laconia 0

Key players: Coe-Brown – Kelli Daniel (12 kills), Enma Zebkisky (10 kills, 3 aces), Haile Comeau (19 digs, 4 aces), Stella Vachon (6 kills, 3 digs, block)

Coach’s quote: “Senior night is always a special night full of emotion, and tonight was no different. I’m so proud of what they have accomplished as individuals and what they’ve given to their teams. I can’t think of a more perfect way to end. New season starts now.” – Coe-Brown’s Renee Zobel

Campbell 3, Merrimack Valley 0

Key players: MV – Mackenzie Shelby (7 assists, 7 digs, kill), Katelyn Herrmann (2 kills), Ryleigh Perry (2 kills, ace)

Highlights: The Pride lost its final game of the regular season on the road against the Cougars, 25-10, 25-14, 25-7. 

Coach’s quote: “There’s not much more I can say than that I’m proud of this group. We may not have won a game this year, but the season was still a success. We’ve grown a lot, built a strong foundation, and proved Merrimack Valley is a volleyball school and here to stay. We’ll be hungry next year when we come back in full force.” – MV’s Tom Clark
