A 34-year-old man was shot dead by police when an officer responded to a report of domestic violence at a home in Northwood early Tuesday morning.
A Northwood officer responded to 534 First New Hampshire Turnpike, off Route 4, around 5:17 a.m. due to an incident between Malcolm Burns and his father, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office.
When the Northwood police officer went inside the home, a “physical altercation” broke out between Burns and the officer.
“During this altercation, the officer used deadly force and fired at Mr. Burns,” authorities said. “Mr. Burns was struck by this gunfire and was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
The police officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and there is no threat to the public, authorities said. The officer will not be identified until a formal interview is conducted.
An autopsy of Burns is set for Wednesday. No other details will be released until it is completed, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
