Several brands of whole and organic carrots, including 365, Good & Gather, Nature’s Promise, and Trader Joe’s, have been recalled after being linked to a multistate outbreak of E. coli, the state health department announced Tuesday.

The Shiga toxin-producing strain of E. coli connected to these carrots can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and dehydration.

While the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services believes it’s unlikely these products remain on store shelves, officials are urging consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers.

“Since E. coli bacteria can cause serious illness, it’s best to throw out any potentially contaminated food,” said Iain Watt, director of the state Division of Public Health Services. “Foods that are contaminated may not look, smell, or taste any different, so there’s no way to tell if E. coli is present.”

Consumers are advised not to eat or serve the recalled carrots, especially since children, older adults and those with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of severe illness.

Those who are diagnosed with an illness related to E. coli are asked to call the Division of Public Health Services at 603-271-4496.

The FDA website has the latest information about the recall.
