A young driver who attended Merrimack Valley High School was killed following a crash into a drainage ditch on a short stretch of road in Andover late Sunday night.
Wyatt Carleton, 17, of Andover was driving a 2010 Gray Nissan Frontier pickup when it skidded off the ice-covered road into a drainage ditch and became fully submerged by water.
“Troopers believe that the driver was traveling westbound on Currier Road when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the vehicle veered off the road to the left as it was crossing over a culvert,” state police said in a statement. “The vehicle flipped over the edge of the road and landed in the drainage ditch, coming to rest on its roof.”
An emergency call alerting authorities to the crash came in at 11:53 p.m. on Sunday. The caller reported that the driver might still be inside the truck, police said.
The road was closed for approximately three hours during the investigation. State troopers were assisted by members of the East Andover Fire Department and Franklin Fire Department.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact Trooper Conor Davis at Conor.K.Davis@dos.nh.gov.
