Joyce Maynard returns to Gibson's Bookstore at 45 South Main Street in Concord on Tuesday, July 18th at 6:30 p.m. to present her new novel, The Bird Hotel! Joyce is a frequent visitor at Gibson's, returning to her home state for summer author events, and we're pleased to host her once more for her newest story. After a childhood filled with heartbreak, Irene, a talented artist, finds herself in a small Central American village where she checks into a beautiful but decaying lakefront hotel called La Llorona at the base of a volcano. The Bird Hotel tells the story of this young American who, after suffering tragedy, restores and runs La Llorona. Along the way we meet a rich assortment of characters who live in the village or come to stay at the hotel. With a mystery at its center and filled with warmth, drama, romance, humor, pop culture, and a little magical realism, The Bird Hotel has all the hallmarks of a Joyce Maynard novel that have made her a leading voice of her generation. The Bird Hotel is a big, sweeping story spanning four decades, offering lyricism as well as whimsy. While the world New York Times bestselling author Joyce Maynard brings to life on the page is rendered from her imagination, it’s one informed by the more than twenty years of which she has spent a significant amount of her time in a small Mayan indigenous village in Guatemala. No registration required for this event.
The Pierce Brigade will host a summer concert on lawn of the Pierce Manse—President Franklin Pierce’s historic Concord home at 14 Horseshoe Pond Lane in Concord—on Thursday, July 20 at 7:00 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. Nevers’ Second Regiment Band is the Capital City’s professional community band and derives its name from its military affiliation with the Second Regiment of the New Hampshire National Guard in the late 1800’s and direction for more than half a century by Claremont cornetist, Arthur Nevers. The band also has links to the Civil War Band of 1861 that accompanied the Third New Hampshire Regiment to Hilton Head, South Carolina. Throughout its years of service, Nevers’ Band has remained a professional civilian community band, but its military origins have always flavored its history and traditions. Nevers’ Band Concerts are an exciting and fun experience for the whole family. There will be an ice cream social preceding the concert from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Attendees should bring a chair or blanket. The rain date for the concert is July 21. More information, including a complete calendar of events, can be found at www.piercebrigade.org.
