The Hopkinton girls’ cross country has proven time and again that the Hawks are one of the best in the state. Now, they’ll get to compete against the best in New England.
Sophomore Maddy Lane finished second at Saturday’s Meet of Champions with a time of 17 minutes, 28.26 seconds on Alvirne High School’s 5K course, just behind champion Mikita Barry of Bedford (17:24.63), leading Hopkinton to fourth place.
The top six teams and 25 individiuals from both the girls’ and boys’ races qualified for next Saturday’s New England championship that will be run at Wickham Park in Manchester, Conn.
Oyster River (71 points), Hanover (74), Exeter (117), Hopkinton (124), Pinkerton (129) and Bedford (215) were the six girls’ teams that qualified.
Senior Shaylee Murdough (12th, 18:51), freshman Maisie Emerson (30th, 19:42), and seniors Reese Bove (46th, 20:09) and Amelia Walsh (66th, 20:40) were the other scoring runners for Hopkinton.
“The girls are ecstatic with their fourth place finish,” Hopkinton head coach Rob Rothe said. “They really brought the fire and grit. They earned this one with every stride. For four of the seven, this was their last MOCs, and they ran it with everything they had. Maddy ran a really smart and aggressive race, chasing Mikita throughout and gapping the rest of the field. Outkicked in the end, but a phenomenal race, breaking 18 minutes for the first time.”
Concord senior Shelly Smith (25th, 19:17) also booked her spot at New Englands and led the Crimson Tide to 11th place.
Coe-Brown (14th) was the other Capital Area girls’ team to compete, while Bow’s Hannah Pawlowski (31st, 19:46), Concord’s Quinn Doherty (51st, 20:10), John Stark’s Anna Chasse (54th, 20:18), Pembroke’s Caitrin Bergeron (62nd, 20:35), and Coe-Brown’s Paige Murdough (63rd, 20:35) and Annabelle Lovett (64th, 20:35) were the other top area runners.
