Letter: Israel-Gaza War

Published: 12-07-2023 3:56 PM

The U.S. fiddles, while Gaza burns. The Israel-Gaza war in two short months has cost the lives of over 60 journalists and media personnel (the most in any recorded conflict in 30 years) and over 15,000 Palestinians (mostly innocent women and children). If you obliterate Gaza to wipe-out Hamas, eventually another group will take its place unless you address the legitimate rights and plight of the Palestinian people. The U.S. has given Israel billions in aid, top-shelf military hardware and provided enormous diplomatic cover, and to what effect?

Today Israel has the most right-wing and corrupt government in its history, and respect for America in the Middle East is at an all-time low. While no one in that region has clean hands (certainly not Hamas), by not rigorously conditioning aid to Israel, we are complicit in the subjugation of the Palestinian people and Israeli war crimes. This is all the more than ironic given the horror of the Holocaust! Meanwhile our attention is focused on the more important Christmas sales!
