Already a division champion, state champion and team champion, Hopkinton sophomore Maddy Lane added some more hardware to her collection by winning the 3,200 meters crown at New Englands on Saturday. 


Baseball: John Stark falls in D-II championship to top-ranked Souhegan

MANCHESTER – In order to knock off top-ranked Souhegan, John Stark knew it was going to take a perfect performance. The Generals took an early lead and Player of the Year Chase Philibotte struck out nine Saber batters, but John Stark (17-3) committed a couple of errors early that allowed Souhegan to claw its way back into the game and weren’t quite as crisp in the field as usual as No. 1 Souhegan (20-1) defeated the No. 2 Generals, 4-3, to win the Division II baseball championship on Saturday at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

The Kingsmen entered the season hoping to make a return trip to the playoffs and win a playoff game. They ended up winning two. Keeping that perspective helped take a bit of the sting out of the Concord Christian Academy baseball team’s 5-3 loss to No. 6 Woodsville (14-5) in Tuesday evening’s Division IV baseball quarterfinal.

NASHUA – The Bears have shown time and again this season that when they’re playing their game, they’re just about impossible to stop. Coe-Brown displayed its brand of volleyball all evening in Tuesday’s semifinal on the floor of Nashua High School North. Excellent serving, aggressive defense and contributions from several players led the No. 1 Coe-Brown Northwood Academy boys’ volleyball team (18-0) to a win in straight sets, 25-16, 25-5, 25-17, over No. 4 Pinkerton (14-4), sending the Bears to the program’s first ever championship appearance.

DURHAM – Ever since he was a freshman, Rio Calle had been thinking about the state’s long jump record. Set in 1998, it was one of just a few that had stood since the previous century. On his final jump, in the final meet of his high school career, Calle broke it.

Baseball postseason tournaments just started on Thursday, but the Baseball Coaches Association of New Hampshire has already released this season’s individual awards. Coaches voted on All-State selections, Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year in their respective divisions.

Ella Goulas is no stranger to winning state titles. But while Goulas has won every single jumping title at least once, she had never won all three in the same championship. On Friday night at Portsmouth High School, Goulas, a senior, and her teammates put all the pieces together.

NORTHWOOD – As the largest team-scoring invitational in New Hampshire that falls around the middle of the season, the Black Bear Invitational can often be used as a measuring stick to see how the state’s high school track and field teams stack up against each other. This spring’s edition wasn’t a typical one, with wet and windy conditions forcing the cancellation of the pole vault and high jump events.

The Hopkinton girls’ track and field team runners showed their strength on Saturday, winning four events and scoring points in nine of 11 as the Hawks won the inaugural Campbell Cougar Classic Invitational on Saturday at Campbell High School.
