Sierra, an off-price retailer of outdoor apparel and gear, is moving into the former Bed, Bath & Beyond store on Loudon Road alongside the TJ Maxx clothing store.

Sierra, formerly known as Sierra Trading Post, is owned by TJX Companies, the parent company of TJ Maxx. It is expanding around the country, having opened its 100th store in the spring, and according to press reports often moves into former retail sites near a TJ Maxx.

The company’s application to put up a sign was approved this month by the Concord Architectural Design Review Committee. Work is going on within the store but it’s not clear when the Sierra will open.

The move comes two months after Concord lost a long-time retailer of outdoor gear, the EMS store in Fort Eddy Plaza. EMS has entered bankruptcy.

An off-price retailer is one that sells name-brand and designer products at a discount. They buy merchandise in quantities directly from manufacturers, taking advantage of unsold items and items from the previous season. Sierra sells apparel, shoes and outdoor gear such as kayaks, sleeping bags, sporting goods, and ski equipment.
